First-Class Delivery: SAS levels Up with a New Mailroom Sorter

Even the most cutting-edge companies still need to deliver the mail.

At SAS's Cary headquarters, that meant managing daily deliveries across seven floors using copy and mail rooms that hadn't changed since the early 2000s. Bulky cabinets, clunky layouts, and worn-out finishes made sorting mail harder than it had to be.

With every option on the table (and a reputation for innovation to uphold), SAS needed a mailroom sorter system that matched the pace, precision, and polish of its people.

So when the company decided it was time to upgrade, they called in Patterson Pope to help reimagine their mailroom sorter setup and give their hardworking copy rooms a long-overdue refresh. The goal: create clean, modern copy and mail rooms that looked good, worked better, and felt right at home in one of the world's leading software companies.

Why SAS Rethought the Sorter Setup

SAS may be a global leader in AI and data analytics, but when it came to day-to-day operations, their mail and copy rooms hadn't kept up. The original mailroom furniture had been in place since the building opened in 2000. Over time, it became heavy, outdated, and increasingly inefficient.

Sorting took too long. Storage wasn't intuitive. And the design didn't reflect how teams actually worked. "Mail used to pile up on every open surface," one team member joked. "We spent more time figuring out where to put things than actually sorting them." The in-house design team knew it was time for a refresh, something that delivered modern performance with a clean, consistent look across all floors.

That's when they turned to Patterson Pope and Hamilton modular casework for each of their mailrooms.

Dialed In and Designed Right

SAS knew what they wanted: mailroom sorter systems that worked well (and looked better). Along with Patterson Pope's storage experts, they dialed in every detail, from layout to finish, to create something that felt fresh, functional, and consistent across all seven floors.

"Measurements were taken, along with the inventory of the rooms," said Whitney Sexton, then a corporate real estate designer at SAS. "The designer came back with real, workable solutions for us. All we had to do was tweak the details and select finishes. It made my life easier to have those details taken care of by Patterson Pope."

Here's what the new system included:

  • Kensington Maple base and full-height cabinets with horizontal woodgrain
  • Frosty white finishes on upper cabinets, backsplashes, and work surfaces
  • Crescent silver hardware for a modern, cohesive look
  • Clear sorter shelves for better visibility
  • Grommet-covered surfaces to manage wires and maintain a clean workspace

The resulting system was cohesive, easy to maintain, intuitive to use, and right at home in SAS's clean, modern environment. Whitney Sexton put it simply: "The new rooms are clean and modern, and an efficient use of space."

A System That Delivers Every Time

Across all seven floors, the revamped mail and copy rooms now match the pace and polish of SAS's broader operation. The new mailroom sorter setup offers a clean, modern look. More importantly, it's created a smoother process for staff who use the space every day.

With Patterson Pope's team handling layout and measurements, SAS was able to focus on what mattered most: fine-tuning the design. "All we had to do was tweak the details and select the finishes," said Whitney Sexton. "It certainly made my life easier to have Patterson Pope handle the design details for this project."

The result? A unified system that fits the brand, supports daily work, and removes friction from a fast-moving workplace. Even if the tech changes, this mailroom sorter setup is built to stick around.

Still Sorting Mail? So Are the Best in the Business

Even at a top-tier tech company like SAS, physical mail and documents are still part of the daily rhythm. That's why investing in the right mailroom sorter setup is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. It's also a productivity boost.

With modular casework from Hamilton, expert planning from Patterson Pope, and a focus on both form and function, SAS created a system that delivers on all fronts. And whether you're redesigning one mailroom or seven, the same principle applies: the right layout makes everything run smoother.
